What is Star Sand?

Star Sand is known as Living Coral, and is actually made up of the fossilized skeletal systems of Calcirindae ( specifically, foraminifera). When these coral die, they become inhabited by diatoms, contributing to our aquatic ecosystem, becoming living coral in reefs, eventually breaking off and becoming unique star shaped fossils along the ocean floor that drift ashore adding to important beach structure. Oceanographers and ecologists study these magnificent formations and acquire data that helps in climate change research.
